First post - I have good general PC experience, but little network or wireless knowledge, except for some research over the last two weeks on these issues.

I bought two Motorola units, the WR850G Wireless Router and the WN825G laptop client card so that any integration issues would be minimal. It seems to have worked, since I'm up and running.

What I don't know is whether WPA/AES is being employed. Both units are capable of it, and I've selected that on the router admin screens, but they're also backwards -compatible with WEP. How do I know what's actually being used when it's operating?

Backward compatible means that it is possible to install it with WEP instead of WPA for Old cards.

WEP and WPA do not work to gather in the same time.

If you installed it with WPA then WPA is what it is using.

Thanks, Jack. Yes, I installed the router with WPA/AES enabled, and they still are.

However, from time to time I've enabled the notebook adapter after removing it or shutting off power to the router, and prior to my knowing the differences between "network authentication" and "encryption," I checked the "WEP" box while inputing the shared key. I wonder if that brought the capability down to 128-bit WEP with no authentication.
