I have now bought a Belkin 54g WAP. This is connected to my wired router. From my main pc I can pint the new WAP. My laptop - an IBM R40 has a centrino chip with 11b wireless networking built in. I have set up the wireless network, given it a name but no security at all as yet until I know it is working. The laptop sees the new network and tries to connect but never makes it. I must be doing something wrong but have looked at the handbook and these forums and cannot see anything. Help!!

Not enough information on the wireless laptop...

- What is its IP address?
- What are the "ping" results?
- If using DHCP, does the laptop show up on the router's DHCP table?
- What is the SSID on the router versus what the laptop is reporting?

You have to change the WAP IP to be at the same band as the Wired Router. You might need to put the WAP on a computer and use Crossover Cable to do so, log to the WAP menu (read the manual for instructions) and change the IP to be compatible with the wired Router.

If you are using the Router’s DHCP server, you have to switch Off the WAP DHCP server.

Once it is done connect the WAP back to the Router and configure the Wireless.

Many thanks for your help. I have only just seen the first reply. Pinging simply returned unavailable. I got it working with Belkin,s help. However firstly I updated the driver for the IBM - they were singularly unhelpful at IBM! They assured me that the problem was with the Belkin and they could not help. I assured them that I had seen a simliar problem on another R40 and I thought that I needed a driver update but needed help finding my way around IBM support. Eventually I was pointed at the right driver and given the wrong instructions. Where the Belkin help was good was with the firewall in SP2. I had turned it off - I thought. However in the advanced settings it was still enable for amongst other things Wireless Networking. Taking the tick out of that box got me the connection! So a lot learnt about the new SP2 firewall - and why it is giving such problems all round! Now for my next trick, I will obtain a Belkin network adaptor - in very short supply in the UK -for the other machine!!
