hi everyone, i hope you can help me.
i setup a wifi connection between my desktop and my wife's laptop and its been running smoothly for about 18 months now. sharing the desktop's broadband to the lappy, filesharing both ways and print sharing both ways.
i just installed sp2 on both machines and its knackered it.
it's not an sp2 issue i don't think, cos i uninstalled sp2 after the first week of hairpulling and reinstalled everything, still no joy.
there is obviously something i ain't getting right. you peeps will tell me what it is i hope.
both machines connect to the network or so it seems and on the desktop i can even see the laptop when i click view network machines in network places. ics, file and printer sharing is switched on, i have turned the security off for the meanwhile, no firewall or av installed, yet i cannot share files, printers or internet
the connection details have been changed a million times by me and the machine from automatic private to manual assigned and another sort. but to no avail.
currently the ip address for the wifi on the desktop is automatic at
169.254.5.192 with subnet at 255.255.0.0 and no gateway.
on the laptop it is 169.254.163.34 with the same subnet and no gateway (with this being the machine that receives a shared internet connection shouldn't there be a default gateway?)
i just went through the network diagnostic tool and everything looks fine except on both machines, the dhcp server ip address in the wifi adapter results is showing as 255.255.255.255(invalid ip address) other than this everything else seems to have passed.
could this be the problem if so how do i change it.
i am sorry for going on and on and on like i am but i am seriously vexed and am ranting.
