I have a SMC Barricade router that I use to connect 3 PC's to the Net. All works well untill I try to use a long RJ45 cable to connect, rather than the typical length (6 ft. or so). I want to spread the PC's around the house, and when I put my P1-166 with 3C905 NIC at a distance (50 ft. or so), it's just fine. When I try the same thing with a P4-1.8 with 3C905, it runs veerrry sloooow! (or won't connect at all to the net). This same PC is blistering fast over a 6ft cable.

Anybody got any ideas?

Hey Wilbur,
I had exactly the same: next to the bub, 100mb. In the livingroom - errors up the yazoo.
Talking to some network guys in the office, I found out that the cable actually matters A LOT.
I'm using CAT5 cable, but I just had done a 1:1 connection, meaning green on pin 1, blue on pin 2, etc. How should I know that they needed to be in exact order? Well... they need to be (cross-over etc).
If you did not know/do this - this is probably the issue.
Search web for T568A or T568B wiring standard, and you have the correct wiring standard.
I'm still having some issues, but at least it's running at 100mb....
Hope this is of use.

I went to this site...

http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/diff568ab.htm

and found out that my "staight through" wiring was WRONG, just as "Nine" thought!!!

Now that I have corrected my cables, I can fly anywhere in the house!! Now I am going to redo all my wiring and cables to get the maximum effect.

The error only seems to show up over long cables, not over a short patch cord (6-10ft). Maybe the reason my P1-266 did not show the problem was that it's too slow to cause the problem(?)

Thanx Ooooodles to Nine (& folks just like him) for helping me out.

Wilbur

Glad to hear it was of help :p
I know how this stuff can drive you nuts - just because you forgot (or did not know) one 'little' detail.
And, I had just fixed my own problems when I read yours - so it had a high 'recognition' value :D
Btw - I also solved my slow connection issue....
Driver problem (after messing with it to get the nic up to 100mb, I probably screwed up the settings).

Anyway - pleasure.
