I'm totally lost on this one. I've changed the OS from win98SE to win2000 on my laptop which I had connecting to my WLAN through a RealTek Wireless PC-Card. I cannot get the link light to come on unless I select Ad-hoc mode. The moment I click back to Infrastructure the light goes out and the laptop tells me the network card has been disconnected. Previously under W98 it worked fine. I had WEP security enabled, which I've since abandoned until it's set up. I have connected using a wired NIC and so I know permissions are all OK.
I had it set up so the Access Point was "open system", and I'm not sure if that needs changing. The laptop cannot find any networks when it scans, only a foot away.

Connection between Access Point and Client should be Infrastructure.

Make sure that you have the Win200 install correctly. Use the manufacturer most updated Drives.

It might also be that your Access Point is not configured correctly, you might consider starting from default.
