SITUATION: My router (Linksys WRT54G v2; all systems running XP+SP2) is set up at home with a IoGear G dongle attached to the laptop. My friend lives 100 yards away and has another IoGear G dongle, and has a dialup connection which we now share on this network.

PROBLEM: My friend wants to connect his son's laptop (with pcmci "b" card) to his router (linksys BEFW11S4 vs2), which he hasn't been using.

QUESTION: Can we use two wireless routers to share a dialup connection?

thanks :-)

Unfortunately two Wireless Cable/DSL Routers can not talk one to the other.

Thanks Jack.

No, I'm not too confused. I read through all the material and it makes sense now.

Since my routers are "gateways" I don't think they can be reconfigured.

What I really wanted to do was have my own wifi network at home and have a separate network (at Doug's place) wifi'd but have the two networks be able to share the dialup internet, which is on his 56k modem card. FYI we live in a very remote region of the world where no one knows about wifi and networking... thus the reason for dialup.

Is there a windows os software solution?

You can disable DHCP from the wireless router and use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) to share a dial-up. It is an unsupported configuration and can be confusing to set up. There are multiple posts throughout this forum that provide examples and information along those lines.

There are also wireless routers that include serial modem support. Those models will support a dial-up connection through an attached external modem. It will work with PPP dial-up arrangements that do not require any additional software dialer. There are also postings with information on this subject.

Regardless of the arrangement, the ISP may have different opinions as well as policies about the sharing of their services across anything but the household that is registered and purchasing their services. Some may also take differing legal stanaces based upon local laws around the subject.
