first off..

Celeron 1.1ghz
DSL through Earthlink
Zyxel modem
D-Link Router
2 PCs

alright...i seem to have problems with AIM (aol instant messanger) and other problems that try and make direct connections to users. When i try and send a file (for example) to a dial-up user, it goes through with no problem. But when i try and send it to another broadband user, i get a error message regarding my network. I've got the PC i'm trying to do it on as the DMZ. I don't see why this is happening if it's set as the dmz, i have no other problems besides when i try and do any sort of direct connect (video, images, files, etc.,). Any help is appreciated.

Just a guess. But a dial-up user probably has no firewall to stop your port connections. A broadband user may have a NAT router with ports closed (like you have) or will use a firewall to protect the 'always on connection'.

but if i'm set as dmz shouldn't that fix that? is there any way around it?

Well, as said 'm just guessing. Your broadband buddie may have a NAT router and needs to put himself in his DMZ as you did. Ask him and fnd out.

That seems more to suggest your DMZ is not functioning.
You could try forwarding the required ports to check it or log a problem with DLink to see what they suggest.
