I am at my wit's end! I have been trying for hours and hours now to set up wireless security on my Dell Truemobile 2300. This is set up as an access point going into a Linksys BEFSR81 8 port gateway. I am able to log on to the 2300 to configure and use it to access the internet via wireless, but.........

whenever I turn on wireless security I can no longer access the internet. My system tray icons tell me that I have excellent signal strength and 54mps speed, but I cannot connect to the internet. I set the router to WPA, hexidecimal, rekey interval 300, WPA encryption tkip. I then save the settings to the router and my laptop says no wireless connections are available. I then open network connections and enter the same preshared key which I entered in the router confiruation window. I choose WPA , and click connect. My laptop then connects to the wireless router, but I cannot access the internet. I turn Zonealarm off during this. When I use ipconfig i get a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ip number. Any thoughts on why enabling wireless security on my router keeps the laptop from getting an ip from the linksys? If I then go back into the router config utility and turn wireless security off and then in network connections switch the properties for the wireless connection back to open i get reconnected and can reach the internet.

Thanks again,

Bob

Hi,

Try using WEP first. Make sure you are typing the correct passphrase and using the same key. Use the MAC address with WEP.

Using WPA will cut into your signal strength and possibly more lost connections.

Make sure the router has DHCP on and SSID is broadcast.

ZoneAlarm is not the problem.

Set laptop wireless to obtain IP address automatically (control panel, network etc.)

Reboot router.

I have DHCP disabled on the wireless Access point as it is on the Linksys router. DHCP on the Linksys is enabled, and the IP of the Access point is fixed. SSID is broadcast. I'll try your suggestions tomorrow. Thanks for the tips and I'll let ya know how it goes.
