when setting up a wireless adsl router does the router need to be hardwired to a computer for it to work or can it be free from any cables apart from the adsl line and power cable.
I ask because the setup i currently has is that it is hardwired to one computer but all the other computers on the network cannot see the hardwired computer even though it can see them.

It does not “need” a Wired computer all computers can be Wireless.
However most users keep at least one Wired computer since it is safer to configure with Wire connection that is stable and free of interruption.

Thanks, i might set it up that way but before i do...
Do you have any idea why my i can access my shared files from certain places.
My set up is as follows:
Computer 1 (hardwired to adsl router) (windows xp home) - can see all files and printers from each other machine
Computer 2 (wireless) (windows xp home) - can only see files and printers from machines connected wirelessly
Computer 3 (wireless) (windows xp pro) - can only see files and printers from machines connected wirelessly
It might not actually be to do with it being hardwired but everything else i've tried hasnt worked

Hi,
Make sure that the wired computer has sharing on. Check the firewall setting in XP. XP firewall has been known to cause the problem you described.
If you change settings in the router you need to reboot.
