we run a wireless network with a netgear wgt624 router, which works very well, except that we have a really big house. is there anything i can buy to extend the range?

The best solution is a wireless Access Point (AP) wired back to the router. It can be easier to locate APs spread across the attic.

Follow the suggestions given with the first reply (Greenstead). Read a few of the post here on difficulties associated with wireless range extenders.

An access point is your best bet.
