I am trying to setup my friend's network, but I am hitting the wall. I had no problem setting up mine with a linksys router and a cable connection, but his network is using a linksys router and a dsl connection.

He has 3 machine in the house:
2 laptops each with linksys B wireless cards
1 desktop wired

He has a verizon dsl connection, that requires a login to get online. It is using a Westell Model 2200 dsl modem. The router is a linksys WRT54G.

When the desktop is connected to the modem and he runs the stupid verizon/msn software(other verizon users can probably relate) he can get online and surf and get mail. Note that there are multiple user accounts on the desktop and similar names are also verizon accounts. However, when I put the router between the modem and the desktop the desktop can't get online when it runs the software and none of the laptops can either.

My goal is to have him either be able to run the software on any of the computers and be able to get online, or even better have the router create the dsl connection and then he will be able to always have all 3 machines online. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it. Thanks very much in advance.

The Router need to be set for the connection and then you have to get rid of the software.

Here is the story: DSL Routers and PPPOE. (http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html)

Hi,

If you have already activated the account you don't need the verizon software to connect to the internet. Install it unless you like the MSN stuff.

1. Using internet explorer to the url 192.168.1.1
2. Linksys setup menu for setting router
3. Top of screen Internet Setup - Internet connection type - PPPoE
4. User name example JamesAndrew@verizon.net
5. User password example DFRD5&yh
6. Router name - change it to another name example PLANETZ
7. DHCP server -Enable
8. Router will assign IP addresses for your network/wireless cards
9. DHCP server - Disable
10. If you are going to assign your own IP addresses
11. Go to wireless, select wireless network mode - mixed (a/g)
12. SSID - chose a name for your network, all wireless cards must use the same name
13. Select a wireless channel - 3/6/11
14. Enable wireless SSID broardcast
15. Save settings and reboot

Once you are able to use the internet go back and enable WEP. Remember all wireless cards must use the same SSID, passphrase, and key. Keep a log of settings for each wire, wireless card, and/or AP added later.
