I have 2 computers on a simple home network. The host (XP) and client ME. I have Freeserve Broadband. My problem is that if I leave my XP machine and not touch it for say 6/7 hrs and then attempt to get access to a web page, I can't connect (or it appears that I can't connect, however, if I re-boot the XP machine, it works fine. NB - I do not re-boot the modem). However, on the ME machine, if I leave it alone for the same time, it works fine.

So, it must be to do with the setting s on the XP machine. Any help and instructions as to what I shoudl be doing? A friend has mentioned that it could be DNS caching (which doesn't affect ME, but does affect XP). Apparently this can be switched off - how I don't know and again I don't know if this is the cause of the problem with the XP machine.

Any help?

Hi maciverd.

I don't know the answer to your problem. But I think it unlikely it is to do with DNS caching.

Is the XP machine a laptop????

If so make sure that the power saving mode for that pcmcia card is off.

This will keep the card alive constantly, however will hurt battery life.

If it is a desktop, delete and reinstall the NIC driver.
And don't allow the computer to "sleep" or suspend or hibernate.

hope this helps,
