Myself and my two sons were able to send files and have video conversations before I installed my Netgear ADSL router. Theycan still do it but I cannot. Can someone explain simply how I configure the firewall to allow me to use all of the functions of Windows messenger.

If you have a router which supports Upnp then it should open the correct ports for Messenger. if you use a router that does not support Upnp or does not properly implement Universal Plug and Play then you get problems. Check your router manual.

The combination of a uPnP agent installed on the machine and support/configuration on the router will enable the automatic configuration of the router to support Windows Messenger. Otherwise, you might need to go the route of setting up dynamic port triggering. Windows Messenger by design does not work with NAT routing, so accommodations need to be made at the router (e.g. uPnP or dynamic port triggering - a.k.a. dynamic port triggering).
