Hello,
Does anyone have exeprience with hardware firewalls on a peer-to-peer network? In particular the DLink DFL-300? Let me explain my setup. I networked about 7 computers in my office. These computers run either Windows ME or 98SE, all have SMC 1244 network cards in them, connected to an SMC hub. The network has worked pretty flawlessly. Last week, I got DSL into the office. Using the help of this website, I was able to put another network card into one of the computers and using the Internet Connection Sharing feature within Windows, I now can access the Internet from any computer in the office.
Here are my questions. Phycially, how do i set the firewall up? Do I run a straight or crossover cable from the DSL modem into the firewall, then run another straight of crossover cable from the firewall into the network card that I currently have the DSL coming into? The manual that DLink sends is not very clear on the phyical setup of the device. The DFL-300 has three ports on it. One for the Internal LAN, One for the External WAN, and a DMZ port. I have tried running straight cables from the modem into the firewall (external wan port), then another straight cable from the firewall into the ethernet card (internal lan port). Couldn't get it to work. Tried the same with crossover cables from the modem to the firewall (external wan port), and from the firewall into the ethernet card (internal lan port). Still nothing.
Am I just setting this thing up totally wrong? If any assistance could be tossed my way, it would be greatly appreciated!
