Hello,
I got the link of the site from a friend, he said it was a real help for him setting u networks. So I came here to, because I've bin struggeling with my network for almost a week now!!
Everything worked great, untill I installed XP pro on my client (ME was installed on it, but I hate ME). I couldn't get the internet working on my client. So I installed ME again, to try it there, cause it always worked there. But now, almost a week later, it still does not work. I now installed XP again, but here are my specs:
- Host pc with 98 SE connected directly to an Alacatel Speed Touch modem (Mxstream, for those of you who are from holland ;)) for broadband internet (adsl).
- Client pc with XP Pro
The two pc's are connected using a hub, and the host is directly connected to the modem. (so there are two network cards in the host pc)
File sharing and everthing works, and using winipcfg on the host indicates that the sharing protocal is installed correctly.
If anyone has any idea what possibly could be wrong, or has any suggestion, I'm open for about everything right now.....
Greets,

Let me see I understand your configuration (check please):
- win98SE host with two NICs. One NIC is connected to the ADSL modem and you have installed ICS on it. The other NIC is connected to the hub and it has IP 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
- WinXP Pro client with one NIC connected to the hub. The NIC has IP 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1
- Both PCs see each other and can access network shares on each PC. The host PC can access the internet but the client PC cannot access the internet.
Is the above all correct ?
Questions:
- Are you using ICS or some other sharing package ?
- Can the client ping IP addresses on the internet?
- Can you access an internet site from the client by entering the site IP address in IE?
- On the client PC do you have XP's firewall (ICF) unchecked?
- Do you have any other 3rd party firewalls running ?
Come back with response please.

I have similar problem to Swordfish.............
Using Windows ME, I hoped to share a broadband connection (NTL uk) between 3 computers using Home networking. Whilst the ISP allows multiple PCs to use the connection (not simultaneously) it does not give technical support.
Investigation shows that the broadband connection only works if only 1 NIC is detected (with TCP/IP binding) - even if Internet sharing is disabled! So, I can either have Home networking OR broadband internet set up on the primary PC but not both - even tho' I have given up on sharing the Internet connection with other PCs. This seems a little harsh - or have I missed something?
Could Home networking (Ethernet) be used with other protocols so that the broadband connection does not get upset by finding more than one NIC (with TCP/IP)?

I'm not surprised you may be confused. NTL and technical support are not words I would put in one sentence.
You're in the middle of someone elses thread here. If you start a new thread for yourself I'll explain how to share the internet connection with all your PCs. (I have NTL broadband with 4 PCs sharing their files with each other and sharing the internet connection).

Is the above all correct ?
Yes, that's all correct.
Questions:
- Are you using ICS or some other sharing package ?
I'm just running a network with the standard windows settings, so I don't think so...
- Can the client ping IP addresses on the internet?
It might, but since I don't know an IP adres on the internet, I haven't tried that yet.
- Can you access an internet site from the client by entering the site IP address in IE?
Well, see my answer above..
- On the client PC do you have XP's firewall (ICF) unchecked?
Yes, I'm not using the firewall
- Do you have any other 3rd party firewalls running ?
No, nothing.
Investigation shows that the broadband connection only works if only 1 NIC is detected (with TCP/IP binding)
That's not the case with my problem, caus it worked fine before I formatted my pc...
First I had ME installed on the client, and everything worked, then I formatted the pc, put XP on it. I couldn't get it to work. So I reïnstalled ME agian, but still I couldn't get it working. So I istalled XP again, hoping that I might sovle the problem like this...
(it's a bit confusing, but XP is now installed on my client)

Ah...
In my summary I said you have ICS installed on the NIC connected to the ADSL modem.
But you said you did not know if you have ICS installed.
You have to have an internet sharing method installed on the host PC. ICS does the job. Check and install it on the NIC connected to the modem. (I think you have ICS because you have the correct IP addresses it would give to the LAN NICs on both PCs - or did you set these manually?).
An internet address you can try to ping and put in the address bar on IE:
207.46.196.102
(that is the IP of http://support.microsoft.com/)

I do have ICS installed on the host pc, with help of the manual on this site.
I've checked the client, but I can't ping the site, or visit it. He comes with the dns error page.

If you can't ping that internet IP address then you don't have connectivity to the internet from the XP PC.
Can you double check these I posted earlier:
- win98SE host with two NICs. One NIC is connected to the ADSL modem and you have installed ICS on it. The other NIC is connected to the hub and it has IP 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
- WinXP Pro client with one NIC connected to the hub. The NIC has IP 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1
Especially the IP addresses and the gateway address on WinXP.
Also on the XP connection check:
Properties-> General tab -> highlight TCP/IP->properties -> checked shoud be 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically.
