Hi,
If I buy a Linksys Cable/DSL Router will I be able to use peer-to-peer programs like Kazaa?
Are there any internet programs that don't work with the router?

Is this the best router to buy?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The Linksys router with UPnP support is as good as any router you will get. All NAT routers have problems with many applications and games. I don't know if Kaza will work with it. (Direct Connect will work in passive mode).

Thanks for the reply.

I use p2p programs quite alot, would I be better off not bothering with the router?
Is there generally problems using these types of programs?

Thanks for the help! :D

Well, a router is the ideal way to connect your LAN and connect to the internet. A four port router is the best choice. You can always open the appropriate ports to allow programs to work thro it (if you know which ports) - (though remember leaving ports open is making a hole in your firewall). Most routers also have a DMZ area where you can temporarily put one PC which makes it operate as though it was directly connected to the internet (and also vulnerable).

Right OK,

So I was looking at buying THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005KAC7/ref=sr_aps_electronics_1_1/202-9999290-4478248) router so I could use the DMZ and be able to use p2p programs etc.?

Thanks again for your help!

For your interests I would suggest a router which supports UPnP. Few routers support UPnP at this time. I didn't see this router claim UPnP (a call to linksys would be worthwhile).

I've the bought the Linker mentioned above and for future reference it worked on 3 Peer-to-Peer Networking Programs (e.g. KaZaA) without any adjustments. I just went into the programs as normal.

I thought I'd post back to tell you how I am getting on! :D
