winxp pro with two nics, one connected to file server the other to cable modem. the file server connection painfully slow all the time, the modem connection painfully slow with both nics enabled but normal with the server nic disabled. this was not an issue with the same configuration on the win98se machine that this machine replaced. same issue exists on all of the winxp machines here (6) both home and pro editions, but another win98se machine and a win2k machine work fine with both nics. i've talked to dell support extensively, they are at a loss. I've talked to GM Access (file server) support...still no help. I've tried QOS enabled or not, netbeui on or off automatic ip configs, manual configs, the server is non dhcp, the cable is. right now the server nic is manually configed, the modem nic is auto. any ideas?

Your configuration sounds beyond that of the typical basic SOHO network that is covered here. It does sound like it might be something related to MTU settings or NIC/networking equipment compatibility. You might consider on-site network engineering assistance, if the engineering folks are unable to support your networking situation via remote telephone.
