I have just installed Win 2000 Pro on my old AMD 400 K-6/2 machine. However, when I boot the machine up, the monitor goes only so far as showing "Windows 2000 Professional Starting..." before showing a blank, dark blue screen. I have allowed more than one hour to pass believing the machine was in some kind of initial set-up mode, but nothing more occurs.

Background information:

I have the same O/S (i.e., OEM; identical certificate number, original OEM O/S disk) on my newer machine. I used this disk to install the O/S on my older machine which had a blank, reformatted harddrive.

What can I do to get this older machine up and running? Have I done something incorrectly?

Please respond to my private email address. This is a rather URGENT matter. All prompt responses would be greatly appreciated.

Is the all the components on the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) for Windows 2000? If not, then all bets are off.

You might double check with the OEM that supplied you with the CD to ensure it is actually licensed for more than one simultaneous installation on multiple machines, if that is what you are attempting. Otherwise, you may be committing a licensing violation.

The OEM would also be the first line of support, if all the components happen to be on the HCL. Some OEMs will modify their distributions to accommodate their custom hardware components. That's also how they can accommodate for any custom components that may not have been qualified on the HCL.
