Hello. I am trying to extend my home's wireless network to a barn (for an ip camera & laptop) that is 400ft away. My home is setup with a Cable modem, Linksys G Router & 3 laptops (Linksys G NIC). I've read numerous tips recommending Repeaters, AP's, antennae’s, etc... Does anyone have firsthand experience (and can recommend hardware) for extending homegrown networks to this distance? I would prefer to stay with Linksys, if possible.
I have complete line-of-sight to the barn (the barn has electric service). Just need a 1 MB connection.
The lower the cost the better. (somewhat important)
Robust connection. (important)
Easy setup (not too important)
Any & all tips are appreciated…Thanks!

No experience over that distance - just opinion/advice.
IF they share the same power system you can use ethernet over powerline.
IF they share the same PSTN line they can use ethernet over phone line.
ELSE its got to be 802.11 radio. For which I would suggest our sister website forum where they do have experience.

It might be done since you have clear line of sight.
You need to attach to the Wireless equipmnet two higly directional Antenna.

I have set up (first-hand) a similar scenario, but I may have used equipment more expensive than what you would want to buy.
I used an OTC virtual cable (transceiver) ~about $700usd
Because the virtual cable acts transparent, you also need to place a router at the other end, which can be wireless or wired.
I haven't had any problems with this in more than a year and use it to beam a T-1 signal.
If you want to go this slightly more expensive (pretty much industrial) route, I can tell you more.
Cheers,
