help with linksys wireless router in windows 98
Please help me! I am try to install a linksys wireless router to share a broadband connection between a windows xp (main) and windows 98 1st edition.
The router installed no problem on the xp, but the problems started with the windows98. I was told that possibly that the wireless router is not compatible with windows 98 1st edition, Is this correct? Is there a possibility I can use this? Please help if you can. I no computer wiz so alot of these terms are foreign to me. I kinda thought this was a no brainer but it turning out to be awfull!! Please help!!!

The Router Does not care which version of Windows it is.
As long as the Network aspect of the computer is installed correctly it should work.
Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Are you hard-wiring the 98 computer to the router or using a wireless network adapter?
Either way, there are a few simple things you can check first off that might shorten your frustration period.

I am using a USB wireless Linksys. I was thinking the usb would make it more simple, althoughg I do have a NIC card in the pc. I was looking for "Plug and Play" I don't think I got it!! Also I tried the post above and it got the win98 to recognize the XP but only until I restarted!!

Tinman,
Please let me know if I understand your problem. From what you've said, I understand that your windows 98 computer is online via the usb wireless network adapter, but you are having problems sharing files with your xp computer.
Is this right?
If so, 90% of the time this can be solved by running the "set up a home or small office network" wizard from the win xp control panel, creating a networking disk on floppy, then running the wizard on your 98 machine.
The wizard is accessible from the xp control panel (classic view). Click network connections and the wizard link will be visible in the upper left under network tasks.
When you run the wizard, specify that you are using a residential gateway and name your network with a name you can remember when you run the wizard on the 98 machine.
The wizard will ask you if you want to create a network disk. Select yes and put a floppy in the disk drive. Run the wizard on your 98 machine and reboot. At that point, it should be easy to share files within a shared folder and also printers.
If you've already tried this, then 1) I've just been practicing my typing and 2) you likely have a firewall problem or have icf (internet connection firewall) enabled on your xp machine.
Cheers,

--what is version # of your wireles usb adapter?
--if it's ver. 2.6 and 2.8 well, unfortunately it's not compatible witht your computer because it didn't meet the minmum requirement of the adapter in terms of the operating system
