HI

I got a Compaq Presario Laptop running XP Home. I tried to install NetGear WG511 wireless LAN card on it. The OS identifies it and popsup the "New Hardware Found" wizard.

When I select install from CD (which is a recommended option), the system tries to copy the driver from the CD to the harddisk and after sometime it hangs.

The system also hangs if I try to boot the machine with the network card in. The same card works fine with another laptop running XP-PRO.

Initially I ran it with Windows XP updates and after that I formatted my system and re-installed windows. Tried to install the card and it failed again. I even tried with the latest NETGEAR driver (2.x)

I'ld like to know whether do I need to install some pacth from COMPAQ?

Can some one throw some light?

Thanks
Subi

Have you tried installing the driver completely before inserting the PC card?

It's too bad that it needs a driver installed. This is not the case with Orinoco cards for my own laptop (WinXP Pro/RH Linux dual boot).

It sounds like there may be some issues with the Windows installation on the notebook or hardware difficulties. If there are any notebook pre-installation requirements, then Compaq would be the one to provide answers to that. Same with the NIC too with Netgear, the manual will usually point that out up front, if not also include it within the packaging (e.g. sticker across the PC Card, like some of the USB devices).
