Hey there,
For the past year i have been using a simple ICS setup between 2 Win XP machines with no problems at all, everything worked fine, and on the client I had the Internet Gateway enabled so that i could remotely disconnect and reconnect the connection.
Well, yesterday i installed Norton Antivirus, it picked up 30 infections, fixed them and all was well.
Atleast so i initially thought.
After running Norton, i noticed that my Internet Gateway had completely dissapeared.
Where there was once an "Internet on COMP1" icon under a "Broadband" heading in my Network Connections, this same icon i used to remotely connect and disconnect to the internet, it has now dissapeared.
However all of my NICS are still listed under the "LAN or High-Speed Internet" heading.
I have tried completely re-setting all of my Client machine's internet settings, i have run the Network Setup Wizard a million times, and yet i still have no luck.
I have also gone into Windows Setup and uninstalled the Internet Gateway feature, then restarted my machine and installed it again to see if it works. Still no luck.
Nothing in my client machines settings have changed, and this all happened after i installed Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro.
I'm not sure if this occured straight after i installed Norton, or straight after i scanned for viruses and Norton fixed, quarantined, deleted, whatevered the infected files.
I'm a little worried that Norton may have deleted a system file that was important for the Internet Gateway feature to function, although i sort of figure that if it did delete an important file i would be getting more of a warning than absolutely nothing happening.
I could go to the server machine and connect/disconnect every time, but in my situation where I have off peak download times starting from 12am, trudging through the house is a nuisance. Especially when you live with people that need to head off to work at 4, the last thing you want to do is wake them up.
So doesn't anyone else have any suggestions? a list of files that are the Internet Gateway needs in order to function? that way i can cross check to see if i have those files.
Maybe a registry edit is in order, i just need to know where to go.
EDIT: Just thought i'd point out that i have a broadband connection, my client machine is the one with the problem, and the server still works fine. The client was the machine that i installed Nortons on.
Thanks for any help.
