Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, so I apologize upfront if this seems like the millionth repeat of a common problem.

I am trying to set up a small two-computer home network. I have a PC with ethernet network card running Win ME. I also have a new Toshiba M30 laptop with Wireless 802.11b, in addition to an ethernet network adaptor. On the other end of things, I have Hi-Speed DSL service from Bell Sympatico (I'm in Canada) and a Bell-supplied ethernet ADSL modem (SpeedStream 5360). This is connected via ethernet cable to a US Robotics 8054 Wireless Turbo Access Point and Router (with 4 ethernet ports).

My Win ME desktop is connected fine, and I have access to the internet no problemo. I have setup a home network on this computer and can see it in my network places.

My Win XP laptop also connects just fine and dandy to the internet (with at times sporadic service, and requests to connect via the broadband connection - but I reckon that is another problem entirely). However, although I can go through the motions of setting up a home network without error, I can never connect to the network just created. I am always told that I do not have permission... contact the administrater... Network is named "mshome" on both computers.

I cannot ping one computer from the other. Both computers can successfully ping the router.

Any thoughts, suggestions? If you need any more info, just let me know and I will provide it as best possible. I am getting desperate!

Thanks in advance.

Miguel.

That error you get covers many sins and usually means it cannot find the other PC - which will be the case if they cannot ping each other.

Try the TCP/IP checklist in my sig below. Your problem sounds it could be caused by the PCs being on different subnets, or a firewall on each PC.

In fact I do have Zone Alarm Pro running on both computers, but also once tried setting it up with both firewalls shut down. No luck.

Zone Alarm can definitely ensure they can't talk. Also, ensure you have your shared folder set to "share" on the other computer.

Win xp will only allow you access a folder or folder if they're set to "share."

Also, your "internet connection firewall," if enabled, can do this on an xp machine and some Norton utilities.

BrokenAlarm is broken. It does not know how to shut down. It is still running while it lies to you about being shut down. The only true way of shutting it down is to uninstall it... I guess its shut down feature is a premium paid feature or something along those lines???
