If your current ISP plan requires the use of any dialer software, then you can not use a serial router. In that case, you must use a computer to run their software in order to be granted access to their network.

Not sure I understand. It's dial-up service so wouldn't you need dialup software no matter which ISP is used? I use Juno.
Why do some routers have connections for backup dialup or am I confusing a wireless router with a wired router? Can you not wirelessly connect with dial-up? Guess it doesn't work like my cordless phone.
What if I placed an external modem between the router and the internet?

Sorry, Juno is one of the ISPs requires their dial-up software in order for them to allow you onto their network. It requires a computer to work. No router will work with that type of ISP service.

How does one find out which ISPs use dial-up software?

It's getting hard, you need to find one that does not require the use of any additional software. One that will support PPP natively. Most of the National plans no longer fit this bill, it's mostly the smaller local ISPs that may be left that might still support PPP.
