I have a small home network with two PC's and a Compaq 5 port 10/100 Ethernet Auto Sensing Switch, The Host uses Win XP, and the other computer uses Win Me. Ive had this network for almost a year and a half and its worked fine.

Not to long ago, maybe a month is when I first started to notce problems. File and Printer Sharing went kaput! I also could not connect to the internet through the Win Me PC. My girlffriend hounded me to get it working, and finally I did using the ICS Wizard on Win XP. Also when this happened we switched our ISP's and now we are on MSN.

It works great again, except for one thing. My Connection Speed through the host has been cut in half! This has never happened before, I used to have connection speeds of 50.6 kbps, now the fastest I can connect is 33.6 kbps. We have another computer upstairs which is not connected to our network, and it still connects around 50 kbps.

Any clues?

Are you talking about modem connect speeds? If so, you might try disconnecting some of your other extensions around the house to see if that improves the connection speeds. You might also try a different access number too, if possible.

There is a lack of information provided here as to how you are connecting to your ISP. It seems like you may be connecting via dial-up based upon the quoted speeds. Other than that, you have not provided any information as to whether this is a dial-up or high speed connection situation.

MSN Dialup.

Sorry for leaving the info out.

Try the two previous suggestions. Since this is a modem connection speed issue, there is not too much that can be done. You might also check to ensure that the maximum connection speed for the modem configuration is set at the maximum for your modem (typically 115200 for a 56K modem).

I've tried all the things you've mentioned before. No luck.

Lastly, try another modem/system combination (since a lot of the modems are "Winmodem" these days that do depend on the computer's CPU processing for some of its functions). If there is no change, then you'll have to chalk it up to line conditions somewhere where between the house and the phone company.

Hopefully you were able to try a different access number or ISP to rule out their end...
