I want to get DSL and have two computers share it. I have a computer that is upstairs and one that is downstairs. I figure that Im going to need a wireless network, but I am kind of confused on how I should implement it. One article I ready said I would just need two wireless ethernet cards and a wired ethernet card to connect to the DSL modem. But most people seem to be using a router or switch, which I am guessing is kind of expensive. Is their something wrong with not using a router or switch? Would my network be really slow or would it not be able to get a signal thru the walls and thefoor? Is their a better way to share an internet connection wirelessly that isn't expensive?

Wireless routers are not that expensive these days. You might want to do some quick pricing research before reaching any conclusions.
The wireless router will allow you to not have the wireless network depend on the gateway computer being on in order for the other computer to be able to access the Internet. In the network card "only" configuration, one computer would have to basically be configured into a router. The "router" or gateway computer will then need to be on in order for the other computer to have access to the Internet.
Can you just buy one device that acts as both the DSL modem and router? Or do you have to buy a DSL modem and then hook up a router to it seperately?

The ISP will usually supply the DSL modem. You just want to make sure it is an ethernet model instead of a USB model, if you can. You are better off not tying the router to the modem, that way you have some flexibility, should you wish to change ISPs (e.g. DSL to cable or vice versa).
