I am trying to set up the following wireless network - can anybody advise as to how to get it to work?

I live in the UK and have an aol broadband account through NTL cable.

I have a cable modem, a wireless LAN router, 2 PCs running XP Home with PCI wireless LAN adapters.

The broadband requires you to sign on (though I don’t think it’s dial up). How to I set up the router to work? The instructions are clear as mud. It says something about the device being 192.168.1.254 by default so add it to the network via an Ethernet cable (straight through not cross over) to a network PC, same domain in the first instance. It then says ‘you then enter the password to get access to the utility’, which I assume is preloaded onto the router, but I can’t even get that far. How do I add it to the network so I can access this web based utility?

Then how do I configure the PCs to access the broadband sign-on bit via the router?

Thanks

A little confused (me and you).

You have to work out what ISP service you have first.

Its NTL cable

or

AOL DSL broadband.

Not both.

And:
What make of router?
What make of PCI cards?

It's NTL cable but via AOL i.e. you have to 'sign-on' to aol each time you want to use the braodband service and it uses an AOL version of internet explorer to do this.

The brand of stuff is Mentor (cheap 'n cheerful).

Is it this?

The only other references I see on the internet to Mentor are forums with complaints that they don't work.

Without any instruction manual its hard to help.

But I am sure AOL has nothing to do with a connection to NTL. You got a free disc with AOL on and loaded it ? Have you tried calling NTL ?

Normally to access the router you use IE and an address of e.g.
http://192.168.1.254
Of course your PC has to be on the same subnet e.g. 192.168.1.1

With NTL cable and a standard router and a PC you just connect them together, repower it all and it will work. Dunno about Mentor.

Hi, right company wrong product! I live in Derby so they are close by. It's this one:

Re. AOL it's a deal they have with NTL I guess where you can get access to an NTL cable broadband connection via an AOL enhanced IE interface where you 'sign on'.

I'll try the address thing, but got confused when I ran the network setup wizard especially identifying which device or connection was the router as it wasn't clear.

Cheers.

Connect modem to router via WAN Port. Located in back of router.
Start your browser and in the address bar type the router's address. You said it was 192.168.1.254.

Select the type of internet connection you have:
PPPoE
Static IP
AutomaticDHCP
PPTP
or service used in your area

Fill in user name.
Fill in password.

Check Network setup (same screen)
router IP
Subnet Mask
DHCP server - enable (router assigns IP address to client/network card) or Disable (you assign IP address to each client/network card)

You may need to enter DNS settings depending on your router.
