I thought I got this sorted as I had it working for a few days. PC - Laptop
I am trying to work out the settings would the default gateway be different
from my ip address as I did a ipconfig /all and it showed up as the same
numbers.
Basically I assign my ip 81 ** *** 152 then it asks for
a subnet 255 255 255 255
Then Default Gateway which I leave blank on my PC on the lap top I place the
default Gateway which is showing as the ip. On the IP on my laptop the last
digit is lower than on my PCas example is 81 ** *** 151 I just cannot link
them so I can use my laptop to view the internet. Using a D-Link DWL 122
adaptor on my PC and a DWL 610 card in my laptop. Any one got some help please on this one. They both read as excellent signalls.
I have also tried the 198. *** ip s as well with no look the OS is XP ro on both PC & Laptop.
I have read and read and asked Q in all relevant news group I am pulling my hair out.

May be you should be clearer about your system connections.
If I am not mistaken you are using two Client Wireless card.
How do you connect to the Internet?
You can not change the defaults of your External IP that is providing by the ISP.

The first thing in suspect is the subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. Why? This is a special subnet mask that is typically reserved for use in routers. The more common subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 for most SOHO type networks.
You might want to take a look at the subnet mask, if that doesn't resolve your situation, then you might want to provide the following information:
1. The goal of what you are trying to accomplish (e.g. share files, Internet access or both).
2. Wiring diagram
3. Full equipment list (e.g. gateway too).
The person that took on the thread initially seems to have decided not to continue forward.
Now... How about some advice on car alarms? I have the basic ignition kill-type alarms from the factory on both my vehicles. What else could recommend and what would be the advantages?

Yea your right its all a headache to me the shop I bought it from after paying them out an extra £28 for doing the settings, well I took my laptop back to the shop they had difficult in doing the settings himself the shop owner who at 1st said it was easy to set up he said to leave it with them & he will get an engineer to sort it out 1st thing.
The following day at the end of the day I get the engineer saying its sorted so I pay out £7.50 I thought great take it back home it still don’t work. What I am trying to do is the brand new laptop I got on the same day as the wireless adaptors I want to use downstairs.
My PC desktop is connected 24/7 to the internet via BT with the old frog style Alcatel what I want is to use internet connections via my laptop. Ok so I call the engineer he gives me a few some settings to try that don’t work so he suggested to bring in the PC as well as the laptop so I did worked fine at his place no problem go home it don’t work after giving a tenner, he then said bring in the frog modem I did and it worked at his place no luck at my place after another £7.50 getting rite pi**ed off by now. It’s now sat after about 5 days of trying and missing loads of business as my mind was just on getting it to work beard growing...
After about 4 hours of setting changes etc it worked GREAT worked for 5 days the business as I was working a way it was switched off for the weekend and yes its back to pulling my hair out.. As I explained in my other reply what all the details are, I get excellent settings full signal and all on the same channel default 6 ad- hoc. I have got someone coming round tomorrow hopefully to sort it out as I have tried asking for help on the relevant newsgroups forums etc.
Now Car alarms that’s my specialist subject but I see your in the US to suggest any good make would be the Bulldog which is a very popular system or the world famous Clifford. Wow have I finished I guess yes apologies on that.

Based upon your latest description, you might have another wireless network in range or some other kind of interference.
http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?threadid=3412
That might explain your changing conditions as you are trucking your equipment around.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The Laptop has always been next to the PC only when setting it up when it did connect I moved it a way 10 mtrs. With no other devices in the way. As I said I will have to wait now for the engineer to pop round I will let you know what the problem was. Cheers

It's good that you have things sorted out. You took the smart road, instead of torturing yourself any more unneedlessly.
