I currently have a working wireless/wired network which consists of 3 computers connected through a hub/switch. Also connected to the switch is a Linksys WAP. This allows 3 other computers with Wireless NICs to connect to the network as well.

My question is this. I'm about to get ADSL Broadband on a completely seperate line. Rather than having to run a huge extension to where the computers are I was hoping to get a Wireless ADSL Router and have it connect to everywhere else through my existing WAP. All the wireless ADSL routers I can find seem to essentially act as a WAP, but with a built in modem. Will these two devices be able to talk to each other? I essentially want my Wireless ADSL Router to be like any other Wireless NIC. I can't operate the WAPs in bridge mode as they're of different makes and I require my Wireless NICs to access the network.

Any ideas if and how I can use a wireless ADSL modem to connect to my existing WAP?

Some thoughts:

- If it would require a hugh cable extension from the ADSL termination then the distance and intervening objects might prove a problem for wireless also.
- If you could wireless bridge it in some way it would be a repeater process which is undesirable as the WAP then has to acknowledge TCP/IP packets over wireless (half duplex) and the 5Mbps throput drops to 2.5 Mbps throput. Well thats still Ok for internet I guess. Plus the other wireless PCs are all on the same channel in the same range and...its getting busy out there.
- There is clearly more scope for errors and retrys in this.
My instincts say this is not a good way to go.

My suggestion. Go for the hugh extension.

Or maybe better you might consider a powerline solution which is fine for internet throput.
