I have a Win XP Pro desktop and a Win XP Pro laptop connected to my Linksys BEFWS11 router. The desktop is wired and the laptop is wireless. Both machines are on the same workgroup, have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled and satisfy all of Greensteads other check list items! They can both connect to the internet with no problems and can ping eachother by IP address. The problem is that I cannot get file sharing up and running. I have enabled file sharing on both machines and have created a shared folder on each machine. I just cannot seem to map to a networked drive! Any suggestions would be hugely welcome!

Regards,

Mark

Have u run the network setup wizard (under the network icon in control panel ) in both PC?

Have u notice any icon by name my network places appearing at the start up menu?
U may have to run network setup wizard more than once and then restarting the PC for it to appear
Network places is where all the other networked PC/files/printer are listed
U will be asked to name a share drive/dolder when u executed sharing; then in netwroked PC exact name will be shown to u if u access it at network places

Have u set both to same workgroup name?

I presume TCP/IP is running as by default it is installed in XP

Then go to network places look for an icon call "add network places" choose option to browse for folder/printer since to specify dolder/drive is quite tough

if u have done all above and if shared folder has not been identified before; it will be identified then
Once that folder is identified use it as though it is a folder on ur PC (copy; paste transfer etc etc)

I do not need to map any network drive example
If u want to see drive C: of PC A in PC B then just enable file sharing of C; (of PC A) via a right click and choose sharing option

As simple as that do not complicate things

If u have done what i have said and still cannot see drive/folder being shared look again for u may have make mistake somewhere

thanks for your responses, but I have a work around that seems to work, (in fact, it is the same workaround that I used for the other topic I posted in these forums).
I added appropriate entries in the LMHOSTS files on the 2 machines and rebooted. the machines could resolve the other computer names and drives were mapped with no problems. I will eventually delete the LMHOSTS files as this was what I did with my previous "wired" problem with no issues. If you want to see how I solved the wired problem, look for posts by me.
This of course may not work for everyone, but it did for me with both wired and wireless networks.
I'll let you know if I discover anything else that may be relevant.
