Im having an WI-fi internet connection problem

1. I Have windows Xp with service pack 1
2. I ran spybot, nothing bad
3. I ran AVG virus , nothing bad
4. I ran CWshredder, nothing bad
5. I ran Hijackthis, nothing bad
6. This is a fresh formatted computer with really installed on it.

My friend across the street has a 802.11b wireless linksys router. I at my house have a usb network adapter, and im getting the internet through him. My signal and link is good as you can see in the pic.

The problem is that the internet is working sometimes on and off and at times it goes real slow. Sometimes I will see lots of packets sent and no packets recieved. At times I will load a page and half of it will load really fast and then totally stop. Its different at all times of the day.

On the other hand my friends internet connection is normal.

Any idea whats causing this problem, or how I could diagnose it? Thanks

Depending on the enviromentals between yourself and your friend, you are probably facing interference. Other houses with 2.4 GHz phones or networks, passing traffic and any other number of "temporary" interference could be the cause of your connection instability. You also have the building structures of both homes to contend to.

Your "perfect" readings are probably correct, but may not reflect the interference spikes that could be occurring around and between the homes. There are just too many things that run "across" any street. It becomes even more complicated when there is traffic driving through too.

You might also want to do yourself and your friend a favor by checking into the terms of service and local laws. In some situations, the current arrangement may be deemed as "theft of services", not too unlike stealing power or cable television services. If that's the case, the penalties and troubles just may not be worth it...
