Hi,
I have a new SMC "G" router. I would like to add a print server as well as increase range by adding a second access point (wired to the first).
The print server needs to physically be where the second WAP is. I assume the most econimical choice is a $100 SMC G router with print server built in - gives me switch, wireless, and print server all in one.
Please confirm if this will work:
- first, configure the new router - disable DHCP functionality
- connect any LAN port on the new router to a LAN port on the original router (probably through a switch)
(do not use the WAN port on the second router)
- connect the printer (via USB) and any PC's (wired or wireless) to the second router.
I guess the second router would be assigned an IP address by the original router which has DHCP server, and that would be the IP address of the printer? All wired and wireless PC's off of the second router I assume would also get an IP address from the original router.

Thank you very much for your time and suggestions/comments.

Correct.

Except.
- The 2nd router will not get an IP from DHCP in the 1st router. It will have a fixed IP just like the 1st router so you will need to change it to say, 192.168.1.254.
- I don't use a print server but I understand the printers are identified by IP and a port number - the manual will explain.
- Set the wireless channel in the routers 5 channels apart (say 1 and 6). This avoids interference.

That sounds great, thank you!!

How do I change the (static) IP address of the 2nd router? Do I do that prior to hooking it to the second router, within it's own firmware (via browser, when I'm setting it to NOT be a dhcp server, changing the WAP channel, etc.)?

Yes thats exactly right.

Do it before connecting to the 1st router since they will have the same default address.

Check you use an address in the correct subnet - I can't remember what SMC use. I think it might be 192.168.2.0 - whatever just change the last humber to 254.
