Hi,
I have a Ethernet ADSL Modem connected to a LinkSys Ethernet Router. PC1 is connected (wired) to this router.
I also have a wireless access point connected to the router. PC2 connects to the wireless AP using a wireless adapter.
Internet sharing is working fine.
My problem is that PC2(wireless) can see PC1(wired) but cant access PC1's files. The error message is something along the lines of "you do not have permission..."
PC1 can't see PC2 at all.
Basically only internet works, file sharing/gaming don't work.
Any suggestions on what to do? I am somewhat of a networking newbie.

It seems no one has encountered it before since this wireless tech is all new.

802.11b is not so new. 802.11g is new and seems to give some problems. We have a lot of experience here with wired and wireless LAN.
Wired or wireless makes no difference to PC resource sharing. Use the TCP checklist in my sig. and come back with any questions.

Ok... I read up on it and it appears to be a corrupt TCP/IP setting in the form of a "ghost" IP. The following threads may help.
http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?threadid=2774
If the utilities don't work, then setting up a static IP within the IP plan may also work.
If it still does not work or you are not comfortable with the steps, your last line may be to call support for either your computer (if Windows was pre-installed) or Windows Support. They may have some recovery steps that might be more efficient or bring in "live" help.

Well for UR gaming prob, I managed to fix mine up, if it is LAN you are talking about. Look for Virtual Servers or Port Forwarding options, then you add the ports that the game uses eg. BF1942 uses 14567, then you have to enter in host of game IP address.

no i dont think that "ghost ip" is the problem
the machines work normally when using the ethernet connections on the router.
it's only when one machine connects wirelessly that this problem arises.
qu: do my machines need netbeui installed? they are both XP
scorpy: u solved the gaming problem but how about ur file sharing?

Did you even try any of the utilities detailed within the threads? The "ghost" IP situation is tied to an adapter, which in your case is not the ethernet adapter, but the wireless adapter.

ok i used winipsockfix, still doesnt work.
i recently discovered that the problem is not associated with the wireless adapter, because the computer still doesnt work when wired into the network (ethernet).
when on the network, it seems that pc1 (the original wired pc) can ping pc2 (the original wireless pc) but not vice versa.
p.s. also ran network wizard on both computers. i chose the option of "this computer connects directly to the internet or through a network hub. (is this right)
btw the network wizard completed successfullyy on the machines
can anyone help

This is easily fixable, but we need more information. What is the OS of CPU1 and CPU2??? Worst case sensario, you will not be able to see the other computer via Network Neighborhood. However, you will be able to do a search for the other computer.
I will give you a couple hints though first:
1) Install NetBieu on both and set it for NetBieu NOT OVER TCP/IP. The reason for this is on grc.com. Also make sure both computers have SIMILAR IP systems (ie 192.168.1.2; 192.168.1.3; 192.1681.4) w/ subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and the same WORKGROUP name and the same default gateway (the IP of your router).
2) Make sure File and Print Sharing is enabled.
3) Ok the permission issue, you must be dealing with 2000 or XP. The easist way to fix this is to enable the guest account. The better way is to log into the other computer. We need more info about your systems.
4) Ok games, you need to do port forwarding. You need to research which games you are dealing with. TechTV (ScreenSavers) just had a report on this recently.
This should get you started,
Scott

Ok scott,
OS of both pcs is XP.
Both have similar IP systems
Both have same subnet and gateway
Both have same workgroup
With regards to the permission issue, i only have administrator accounts on both pcs, no guest accounts. So when i check if the network is running, i log into both computers to do so.
The only thing that i dont have in ur list is installed netbeui on both computers.

Well, first I would install NetBieu. I forget where it is (under XP you actually have to install the NetBieu software then activate it). Again see, grc.com
The goto Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Network ID - Properties and under computer name (you probably already did this but let's check it anyway) Put in something simple. Then do Start - Search - (Files and Folders) - Computers and put in the name of the computer.
Unfortunely, Network Neighborhood is not that reliable. For me, NN shows me all of the wireless computers on my network; however, it NEVER shows the one computer which is directly plugged into my router. I can ping it; I can Find it; but I can never see it in NN. When I plugged my landlady's laptop into the router, the laptop could see the other computer, but it couldn't see any of the wireless computers. When I unplug the laptop and go wireless, it can see the other wireless, but not the computers plugged in.
Worst case, use Find.
Hope this helps,
Scott

Ok i installed netbeui, but how do i configure it for "netbeui NOT over tcp/ip"?
Ok now the wireless pc can access the files of the wired pc.
But in NN of the wired pc, when i click on the wireless pc the permission error comes up.

Ok under Network and Dial-up Connections - <your network card properties> - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties - Advanced - WINS - then enable LNHOSTS lookup and
disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
As for permission errors, not sure, check the spelling and security of both accounts, check the permissions of the folder/file/printers you are trying to share.
Worst case senario, enable the Guest account.
