HELP!

Here's the deal:

I have a desktop with XP (Home edition) and that computer has an internet connection via cable broadband modem (Motorola Surfboard). That in turn, connects to a MS MN-500 Wireless Access Point/Router, then connects to the desktop.

I also have a laptop using a wireless NIC.

I have been attempting to network the two computer together, but it isn't working. I am however, able to share the internet connection on both computers.

What's the difference between the MS Broadband Network Utility and setting the network up using the XP Network Wizard???

I've been on the phone with MS technical support, only to have them tell me to call another tech support number.

Can anyone help me?

You don't need to use either of those setups.

Doing it manually allows you to know exactly what has been configured.

I wasn't sure I fully understood your configuration.
This?
ISP->cable modem->PC1->MN-500 -> PC2
or this?
ISP->cable modem->MN 500->PC1 and PC2 and wireless laptop

The setup is different for these. You should be using the 2nd configuration.

Here's some clarification on my configuration.

ISP-->cable modem-->WAP/Router-->PC1

Oops...hit the post reply button on accident. Heres the rest of what I was going to say.

ISP-->cable modem-->WAP/Router-->PC1(via hardwire)
-->PC2(wireless laptop)

Both computer are using XP-Home edition.

So my setup is exactly like you second example.

You mention setting up the network manually. How is this accomplished? I suspect this a pretty technical process?

I'm fairly confident I could figure it out with some help. Is there a resource on this site that has information on manually setting up the network?

Thanks for you response, hope to hear again from you.

Manual setup is not so complex when you are using modern products like XP and a router. They are designed to be as much plug and go as possible.

If you have internet sharing working then you are almost there.

To share resources between the PCs you need:
- The same workgroup name in each PC.
- A unique name for each PC.
- A folder on each PC set to network share.

Thats it (hopefully).

If you still have problems you can use the TCP checklist in my sig. and/or come back with any other questions.
