I have bought the Dlink 650+ WIFI card for my inspiron 8000 running win2000 ; I don't even get to the point where Windows detects the hardware : after installing the driver and rebooting, the startup freezes when the card lights up. I have flashed my bios with the latest version, and I have checked the card on another computer and it works fine. The Dell diagnostics tell me my Cadbus adapter work fine as well. Any idea anyone ? Thanks

Hmm...that sounds bad. I don't know the answer but I use an I8100 (XP) and a netgear wireless PC card and thats fine. If theres any comparisons might help just ask.

What do you mean 'the startup freezes' ? You mean the whole laptop locks up?

Have you checked the driver configuration for any IRQ conflicts?

Have you posted at Dell talk ? There are some very helpful and knowledgable people there.
Check this and ask for help:

I do believe a lot of these wireless PC cards have problems with power management so it may be worth disabling power save on the driver.

What I mean by "Startup freezes is" : when the "Windows is starting up" screen with the logo and the blue running bar appear, when the bar is halfway through the WIFI card lights up, then the bar stops (and stays there no matter how long I wait, e.g. overnight).
If I then take the card off the startup resumes normally.
I have tried installing the card while plugged to the mains and with powersave off, it did not help.
I tried Dell on the Uk site, and Dell support, they couldn't help.

Dell support will not help with anything you didn't buy from them. But I still suggest the Dell Talk forums and ask other Dell users for help.

It sounds like an IRQ conflict but if you can't even get booted you can't do anything with it. The simple answer is (if you can) take it back and change it for another make, Netgear or Orinoco maybe.

With my XP Dell laptop I hotplug the PC card (disable before removing). I don't know if you can do that with Win2K - don't try it unless you are sure its ok. If you can insert it after boot up you might have a chance to analyse what is wrong. But I wouldn't take any chances to damage your laptop.

Hotplug gives exactly the same problem.
I have checked the IRQs, there are no conflicts on my already instaleld hardware, but since I can't choose the IRQ on the card I can't see if that's causing the problem. Also I haven't managed to find a way to change the IRQs of my existing devices.
I'll post on the dell forum. Thanks
