Can ANYONE help - NT and XP - internet sharing works but not file or printer sharing

The NT machine is my host machine and the other runs XP. I networked them with a router and they both share an internet connection and I can send and receive e-mail. But I cannot make them see each other to share files or peripherals.
The Networking Wizard from XP will not work on NT. Even in NT's help section I cannot find anything that will tell me how to configure a network or add a computer to the network. Can ANYONE help with this? NT is a real stinker.

I have NT and XP networked via a router.

The networking wizard does not always seem to get the job done.
Heres a checklist to run thro to enable PCs to share resources:
Note : You only need one protocol (NetBT = Netbios over TCP/IP)
- All PCs have TCP/IP installed.
- All PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled.
- All PCs have the same workgroup.
- All PCs have a unique computer name.
- ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:.
- ALL NICS are on the same subnet (typically IP 192.168.0.* subnet 255.255.255.0).
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on each NIC.
- All NICs have their node type = broadcast or Hydrid (check with Ipconfig /all).
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled.
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled (until connection is working).

Even with this there can be some additional problems to solve.

How are you giving IP addresses to the PCs?

Ick. This sounds complicated but don't give up on me!
#1- I know my computers have different names.
#2- How do I get to the NIC for node type and sharing?
#3- As far as the IP addresses go - I think the Wizard or the directions for the router told me to have it be automatic. Does that sound right?
#4- How to do I know if TCP/IP is installed? ( I think it is but how do I find out?)

Answers to your questions:
#1. Good - but have both PCs the same workgroup ?

#2. Go to the DOS command prompt (In XP Start->Accessories->Commpand Prompt). Type Ipconfig /all. Amongst the response is node type - anything is fine except 'peer to peer'.

#3. Yes, automatic is good. But check what you got for addresses - it is included in the Ipconfig print out. Post them here - IP address and subnet mask.
(in fact if you type - ipconfig /all > file.txt - it should put the output on your desktop in a file and you can copy and paste the content).

#4. Don't worry about TCP/IP. If both PCs get internet response then TCP/IP is ok.

Also check on XP network connections that there are no network bridges installed. If you see any delete them.

OK.
#1- my workgroup was NOT the same, I fixed that (I named the workgroup the same on both computers. Is that all I have to do for that?) It didn't fix my problem though.
#2- For the node type - XP is 'hybrid' and NT is 'broadcast'.
(I tried the ipconfig/all>file.txt but it didn't do anything)
#3- IP address and subnet mask for XP - 192.168.0.100 and 255.255.255.0-----------IP address and subnet mask for NT - 192.168.0.101 and 255.255.255.0
(a PPP adapter also shows up but shows only zeros for IP address and subnet mask)
#4- How do I check to see if XP has network bridges installed?

OK - so workgroup and IPs and node type are OK.

- no network bridges installed in XP.
START->Connect to (left click) ->Show all connections.
Look for any connections with the word bridge in it ->delete

Lets see whats left on the checklist.
- All PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled.
- ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:.
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on each NIC.
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled.
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled (until connection is working).
Have you checked all the above?


Also on the XP PC go to command prompt and type
Ping 192.168.0.101

Similar on NT type
Ping 192.168.0.100

Do you get any timeouts on these pings?

#1 - no bridges that I see. I just see my LAN.
#2 - XP was set to default so I changed it to enable TCP/IP-----
I can't tell with NT, all I see is "DHCP enabled".
BUT after doing these things - they can see each other and I can share my files. YEAH!!!!
As far as the printer goes - there are no drivers for NT for my printer (Lexmark x85). And I would need that right?
That is the biggest issue I have with NT. Peripherals are a nightmare.
#3 - I don't know what a ping looks like if it times out but I tried it and it didn't look like it timed out.
#4 - "ALL PCs have network shares defined directly under c:." - I don't know about that but since they can see each others stuff does that mean it is defined under c ?
Is there anything else I should know? I'm out of luck on sharing the printer because of the driver right? I would just have to share the file and print it from the XP?

Well, if you are sharing files then everything must be correct now.
Well done.

Shame about the printer. You can only use an NT driver on NT. Drop files in a shared area and print from XP. Strange, I have a Lexmark printer (Z65n) and they have the NT driver.
