I have a Netgear MR814 DSL Router with a PC on W2K sp2 on Ethernet and a Laptop on WXP wireless. I can ping the laptop by IP from the PC, the Laptop can see the PC on my network places, but, can not ping the PC by IP neither name. Both can go in the internet, and can ping the DSL router. Both have the same Workgroup name and are set by using the DSL Router as DHCP server. If I type IPconfig all entries are idential except for XP is Hybrid and 2K is Broadcast. I want to be able to share the printers and see each other files. I am no so good with networks, I know that I am setting something wrong. Help!

Its a strange problem.

When you say
"the Laptop can see the PC on my network places, but, can not ping the PC by IP neither name. "

Do you also mean that if you click on the PC in network places you get an error ?

Normally this type of problem would be caused by a firewall on the PC, either ICF or a 3rd party firewall (e.g. Zonealarm or Blackice). Disable and uninstall any 3rd party firewall until the connection is working.

There are two other possible causes I know of.
1. In XP SP1 a change was made so that if you have set 802.1x authenication it will disable the connection if there is no authentication server available. Disable 802.1x authentication in the card properties.
2. XP can get confused when you swap cards around or switch between wired and wireless connections. Delete any network place icons and reboot everything and give it time (15 mins) to populate the Netbios name table.

Hope that helps.

I know is odd, my friends at work are trying to find a solution to this too. I might end up setting a small pc as a DHCP server. Thanks for the tip I will try that later. What I meant is, when you look on my netwrork places I can see my workgroup and the 2 PCs names. When you click on the Laptop (XP pro) I get an hourglass and times out. So far I managed to get a prompt with an User Id and password. But It not let me in. I used domain or workgroup\username + password or just user id + password and does not let me in. If I ping the PC by IP it times out, if I ping by name it times out too. The PC (W2K) does not recognizes the laptop by name.

Richard,
Have you checked to see if the built -in XP firewall is disabled? I'm not sure, but I believe it gets activated by default.. Right click on the network connection you are using for your network, go to the Advanced tab and make sure it's not checked.. If it is, it won't allow you to see network computers..

I checked and the box is not checked. So far I got to see the W2K box and the Linux box. I do have a problem with User ID and password. If I try to map the drive it ask for User ID and password. I used any imaginable IDs names, like worgroup\UserID and does not recognized any of them.

On my network, I have the same user id and password on each machine.. Is that how you are set up? If not, you might want to try that. Also, I had a problem on my wireless laptop where I could not access any shares on my laptop, even from the laptop. Enabling Netbios over IP and rebooting resolved that problem for me..

Strange alright.. Only thing I can think of is that when you create your shares, did you enable.. "Allow network users to change my files" ? on the laptop?
