Hello,

I'm pretty new with everything concerning WLAN, so please bear with me even if I should happen to make some idiotically obvious questions. :-)

Anyway, I've been thinking of setting up a WLAN alongside my current LAN so that the laptop doesn't have to be tied down to the table with the RJ45 cable. For the WLAN hardware, I've been thinking of getting D-Link's DI-614+ and a D-Link DWL-650+. Does anyone have any comments on either one of the products above?

My current set up is something like this: I have a DSL connection that goes to my router (a Pentium box running Red Hat 8.0), which is used as a gateway between my LAN and the internet. The rest of the computers are hooked up with an 8-port 10 Mbps hub and have been assigned static IPs from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.5.

I still haven't found a clear answer on whether or not I can just hook up the DI-614+ with the hub and be all set. Any ideas? What about other products? My current budget is around 300 euros for the base station and PCMCIA card, so any suggestions should be within the limit.

Regards,

Tuomo

Your choice will do what you want.

D-Link's DI-614+ is a full internet router and DHCP server. You could replace the Linux box with it and plug the Linux box into the switch on the 614 (thats what I would do) . It would be good to reduce the hub connections and get as much as possible into the switch of the 614.

If you intend to keep the Linux box as your internet host then you really only need a wireless Access Point and plug it into the hub. However there is not a big price difference between a wireless AP and a router so I would go for the 614 anyway and you have a backup internet router if you want to take the Linux box down anytime.
