I'm having some trouble with my new DSL connection. I have two computers connected to a 3com OfficeConnect dsl router (which is connected to the dsl modem). I use Windows 98. The one computer is in the same room as the router, and works perfectly. The other one is through a long cable that just got set up and runs almost 100 feet. I can access the net through that one, but the connection drops out very often, or just seems incredibly slow (10 minutes for a simple webpage etc). The TCP/IP->NIC is set up to obtain IP addresses automatically, but it seems to want to be at 192.168.1.11 even though I tried setting the router to only assign IP's between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3, just to test it. (The computers used to be in a network where that one was set up with 192.168.1.11 in the TCP/IP->NIC settings.)
Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Could it be a Windows setting or might my cables be bad?

Hmmm, try checking on the LinkSpeed of your card, is it running under 100 mbps? does your 3com router has an MTU capability in which you can increase the Bandwidth of your router.

try consulting 3com with regards to the distance limitation of their router.:D

Ah just tried Linux on another harddrive on the bad computer and it works perfectly so now I know it's a windows setting. Anyone know what it could be? And why my windows insists on keeping the 192.168.1.11 IP-address when i've set it to obtain automatically?

maybe the DHCP capabilities of your router is not enabled, and if you have a DHCP server make sure its properly configured. with regards to your computer try visiting www.microsoft.com i know they have some workarounds regarding that matter
