I bought one of those cheap Network Everwhere 802.11b routers and am wondering if it's a lemon.

I've had a linksys router before and only had to do minor tricks to be able to connect to an internal workstation with an ftp server running from the outside, but can't figure it out with the new wifi one.

I set the server up in the dmz, but no go.
I tried port forwarding ranges (including 50000 - 50100 for pasv).
I tried upnp ports.
I can connect from other workstations on the lan with a 192.xxx.x.x address, but not the ip of the router.

I even tried randomly turning things off, like block wan request, ect, and upgraded the firmware but nothing's worked.
Anybody got any how-to's or knows what it could be?

The wifi should make no difference.
Sounds you have tried the right things.

You have any firewall on the FTP PC?

What about the other way round. Can you ping the external PC from the wifi PC?

Yeah, I'm running zone alarm on the ftp pc and added my laptop as a trusted rule by it's static ip. I'd shut zonealarm off and check from work, but that would be silly to leave it unfirewalled all day.

Funny thing is that I can log in by 192.x.x.x, but not by the public ip address which is supposed to just forward back.
I did manage to log in from work today, so something's right now.

On a side note, I tried to run a shoutcast server on the same box.
I can get the stream from my laptop on the lan, but can't get it from outside the lan - zonealarm doesn't log any blocked packets either. I forwarded ports 8000 - 8001 to the server.

I'm not sure you can configure zonealarm to do this can you. I have found zonealarm to be inconsistent sometimes and I disable it to allow external access to services.

The router provides a firewall against intrusion, albeit you are opening a hole to the FTP service. With a 2nd firewall you would have to open the same hole so I'm not sure you gain much. Zonealarm is good to detect unexpected outgoing connections.

Thanks Greenstead

That's what I use ZA for mostly - monitoring outgoing connections. It's very handy.
