Hi,

For some reason, every now and then, my wireless card in my laptop (Netgear WG511 54mbps PC Card) loses its signal, and for some reason, causes the screen to freeze - taking the card out and putting it back in again solves the problem, with the card picking up the signal straight away. Can't find any reason why the signal would just disappear, and why the screen would freeze...

Any ideas?

Using WinXP Pro on Toshiba 8100 Tecra laptop with Netgear WG511 54mbps PC Card

Thanks,

Peter

Are you trying to connect to a not existing server or ftp? Do you still have old network connections? Maybe from your old nic?

Well, I still have the wired PC card that I use now and then (less than once a week) - I remove the wireless card and plug in the wired card - no problems with connections. In my Network Connections only the one connection shows up (either the wireless card or the wired card, depending which one is plugged in). No network drives are loaded on startup, so no problem there. In network places are just two places - one is shared docs on the laptop, the other is shared docs on my main PC, which is always on.

I'm stumped... [:(]

I've narrowed it down - it happens when the laptop returns from standby mode or from hibernate mode...the network card seems to jam things up then - taking it out then putting it back in sorts the problem out...

Make sure you disable powermanagement of the wireless device. Can be done in the configuration screen of your device. Don't let xp disable it to save power

Okay, that seems to be working for now - I will test it out thoroughly tonight and let you know if I still have problems - many thanks!

In general, I have negative experiences with the power saving gadgets in windows.
