I spent a weekend bashing away with this new SMC Wireless Router ADSL product until it worked with WEP security with my existing LinkSys WUSB11 v2.5 and v2.0... if you are trying the same, here's what worked for me:

1. upgrade the SMC 7404WBRA firmware to firmware v022a from www.smc.com.sg, and configure the wireless router as per mfr guide, select 128bit WEP encryption, and generate a key

2. on the XP computer using the LinkSys WUSB11, use WinXP zero config utility to
- Carefully enter the same SSID and WEP key (128bit encryption) as from teh wireless router
- Disable the IEEE802.11 identification
- select only connect to Access Point (Infrastructure) networks
- disable the "connect to non-preferred networks"

On the WinME computer, use the LinkSys software, and again carefully enter the SSID and WEP key

3. Check the power management for the WUSB11 devices is set to off.

4. follow the network setup instructions for file "Sharing" in this forum

5. only use the firewall in the SMC wireless router, disable WinXP firewall. Use www.grc.com to test the firewall.

After doing this I am now getting reliable secured wireless internet connections to both computers.

The only remaining problem is that when I try to copy large files (>100s MBytes) between my own networked computers, then sooner or later the copy fails, and the second networked computer can not be accessed on my Network Places, further the second computer loses its' internet connection and needs to be rebooted. Likely a Windows problem.
