Hi,

I've currently got a broadband connection shared around our house wirelessly with a belkin router. So far, the 3 networked computers all have belkin 54g networking parts.

I've recently bought an Actiontec 11mbps 802.11b USB wireless network adapter for an old laptop running Windows 98. The rest of the network is running Win XP.

Surprise surprise, the Actiontec adapter is causing a big problem. I have installed the device, with updated drivers, although when I try to connect it to the wireless network, it just says its 'Joining...', but never seems to actually join the network. It detects the wireless network fine, and reports a 95-100% signal quality.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this problem fixed? Nothing I do seems to be helping.

I'd be grateful for any help you could give me.
Cheers,

Jason

Most probably your network is running on 54mbps / 802.11g mode and not on the 11mbps 802.11b fequency.

Make sure that your g-parts are running in b mode as well. That can be done in the properties of "my network places." Select the wireless device and click it properties and choose configure. Go to tab advance and select advance again. Select IBSS 54g(tm) mode and choose for 54g - 802.11b compatible or 802.11b mode. Make sure you do the same with all the wireless devices.

Note that your network speed will drop from the maximum 54mbps to a maximum of 11mbps. It's the weakest chain that determining the maximum speed.

The fact that your b-card is picking up a signal, is a good sign. This should be the bottleneck. If you encounter any problem, let us know.

Cheers for your help!.

The router was set for only 54g usage, once I changed it to allow all 802.11 wireless standards it connected to the network and worked fine.

In our house, the walls are so thick anyway that no-one received e connection to the network greater than 11mbps anyway, so it wasn't an issue.

Thanks again for your help.
J.
