everything ready but pc's wont talk to one another

I have desktop windows 98SE,Laptop windows xp,all fixed up with Belkin desktop card and laptop card.Had problems setting things up but was talked through whole process with technician,green monitor on both machines but I still cannot get a connection on my laptop.I would appreciate a little help if anyone can get me sorted out.

Your problem is probably the settings of the Sharing

Hi, I cant get my pc's yet to speak to one another,I phoned Belkin and was talked through for a second time and everything seems to be correct but still when I try and connect to the laptop the connection fails saying error 0797,would this be a fault to the Alcatel speedtouch modem.At the moment both pc's are close together but normally are about 4 metres apart.:confused:
