I have realized that I need to get a broadband connection. Once I have a broadband connection, I would like to set up a wireless network in my house and yard. I have a workshop/office in a shed at the back of my property about 40 yards from my house. I would prefer not to run cable. Perhaps I am asking to be spoonfed, but I am looking for recommendations for hardware. Any suggestions.

40 yards could be a problem. It all depends on the blocks in between. If it's an open field, I will work. If there are house etc. in between, I don't think it will work.

I would go for linksys. (www.linksys.com) more specfic http://www.linksys.com/products/group.asp?grid=33&scid=35

The distance to "the outback" is slightly less than 40 yards (meters) and there are a few trees in between.

I will be looking for a wireless router (802.11g). I have read reviews that indicate that some are inherently better than others. And I have seen the recommendations for detachable antennas. But I have not seen anyone who has significantly improved their performance with a higher gain antenna.

Am I not looking hard enough?

Most of the routers have detachable antennas, because of the packing space it takes. It's just a matter of finding an antenna that does fit on that particular plug. Indeed, most manufacturers don't offer extended antennas. If you know the plug type, you'll be able to find an extender.

I haven't noticed much quality difference between the a-brands. It's mainly a matter of choosing the right channel when configuring it.
