Hi,

I recently added 5 new 802.11b WLAN adaptors to an existing network that already had 2 WLAN's in service.

The connection of the new WLAN's went well. Initially, WEP etc has not been set. All Clients can surf the net and get/send email just fine, however, when their main in-house point of sale program is started, it takes well over a minute for the program to start. When the program is running, all transactions, that used to take less than a second on the wired network, now take up to 20secs, or more and in some cases, the program just freezes and dies. All data for the main program is stored on the 'server' PC. All PC's are running XP Pro. None of them are using QOS Pack Scheduling, as I found some 9 months ago that QOS slows networking to a stand still.
The main program is actually on the server, with shares setup on all Clients so that they can use it. The program is not designed to be installed across the network itself.
Any help to speed this beaty back up to normal would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards,
bw

Try Re-enabling QOS. Maybe the wireless needs it or something.

802.11b is painfully slow, and if your POS terminal is sort of bandwidth hungry then maybe there's a problem with available bandwidth. Plus you're now sharing bandwidth with 5 more clients.

Assuming the above is the problem, then you can put your POS terminal on it's own channel and everything else on other channels to improve bandwidth issues. With 802.11b, channels 1, 6, and 11 are nonoverlapping so put the POS terminal on 11 and everyone else on 6.

802.11a doesn't have the interference problems like b and g, and is a lot faster.

Try re-installing the POS software too. Does any other software on that pc have problems?

Thanks for your reply.

No, the only software with the problem is the in-house app that I mentioned. Email, surfing etc all fly like they used to. Will try your suggestion re separate channels and see how I go.

Thanks again.

I do not know what your program is doing but functional bandwidth of 802.11b is usually 4-6Mb/sec.

7 users would hardly survive email and browsing, but real application with Data transfer Nah!
