Hi
(subject should read TCPIP on client pc, do I need it?)
I have been following through your excellent pages and am now a little confused. I have 2 machine both running W98SE. Host pc is running ICS and Zone Alarm Pro.
I have opened up a port to allow it not to be firewalled when using a p2p program, i had a problem with port forwarding.
Security article seems to suggest that I should use netbeui for the lan and remove tcpip bindings.
I have removed tcpip bindings from the nic in my host that connects to my lan. Do I have to remove the tcpip binding from my client pc as well ?

I don't know if you really need to remove it from the client also but is no harm to do so. You should remove TCP/IP binding from File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks.

Hi
What I should have said was, when I removed the tcp/ip binding from my client pc, I could no longer access the internet. It is only by having tcp/ip on the client that the client works. All this is with tcp/ip binding removed from my host pc. So my question is, is this setup secure?

Maybe wer're both getting confused here.

You need TCP/IP installed to access the internet.

If you are using Netbeui as your LAN protocol, then you can remove TCP/IP from 'Client for MS Networks' and 'File and Printer Sharing'.

Hi
Just to reiterate. Host pc has tcp/ip bound to the outgoing network card, the one that connects to the internet- the lan card on my host does not have tcp/ip bound, just has netbeiu.
On my client- it has only one network card for the lan, it is bound to netbeiu BUT it also seems to need tcp/ip bound to the card as well, otherwise it does not appear to be able to see the internet.
The host is running ICS.
The article on this site seemed to suggest for max security that you must unbind all network cards on the lan to tcp/ip and only use netbeiu, i cant do this without the client not working. But as long as my host is not bound to tcp/ip does that mean that my lan is secure?

No, the article is not saying that. You must have TCP/IP installed on each NIC. But you unbind it from 'Client for MS Networks' and 'File and Printer Sharing'. Don't uninstall TCP/IP. You cannot access the internet without TCP/IP on each NIC you want to internet from.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. All is ok and working now. I must have accidently removed tcp/ip when I unticked the boxes last time. This time it stayed!!;)
