I just got a SMC2804WBR router and is working great with SMC2835W wireless card. Earlier I had problem with Linksys G kit and now I am quite happy with the SMC product.

Now let me address my issue:

My setup has Win2K, NT and Solaris clients. I am using wireless with a IBM laptop running Win2K Pro. After I enabled 64 bit WEP with the router, the wireless card receives the signal but does not obtain an IP address. Is this a known issue and how to resolve it ?

Is WEP alone secure as wireless user to the network will require the HEX key to establish connection ?

How does WPA and 802.1x work and how to configure that with SMC setup ? Your help is appreciated.

Now the WEP is working. But results in another issue:

I get two network card entries for SMC wireless card in device manager when VPN client software (Checkpoint SecureClient) is installed. Say like SMC 2385W and SMC 2385W Secureclient.
This results in some conflict with SMC wireless connection. Even though it receives good signal, it does not obtain IP address. After I uninstalled the SecureClient and rebooted the laptop, SMC WLAN successfully obtained an IP address. Well, the WEP works but how the heck do I run the VPN client ?

Other security questions:

SMC WLAN tool does not seem to be supporting WPA and 802.1x authentication even though SMC router supports it.

Is it possible to use WPA authentication with Win2K prof or is it only a reality with XP ?

Micosoft provides a patch for 802.1x authentication for W2K sp3.

Has anyone tried it with SMC router ?

Thanks in advance for your help

After reinstalling earlier version of secureremote VPN client, I could run WEP connection fine. But once I disconnect and make changes to any connection settings in WLAN tool, it does not connect again. Then I have to disable secureremote on network adapters and reboot to get it working.

Althought the SMC router supports WPA and 802.1x, the SMC card and driver and utility do not - it is in development by SMC. Windows XP supports WPA and 802.1x and can be used instead on the SMC utility, which is what I use. I don't know about W2K.
