Ok, so here's the deal. I bought a Netgear rt314 router about a year ago and had no problems with it. As time went on, more and more people started getting routers and I soon couldn't connect to anyone. Now the other day I went to some site and it was telling me to set up this filter to allow people to connect to my computer. I tried typing in all the stuff it said in the telnet menu (filter configuration) and it seemed to be going well. I saved the info then logged off telnet. When I tried opening a webpage, it didn't open it. I thought maybe I had set it up wrong so I was going to go back in telnet and take out the filter I had just added. One problem–it won't let me connect back onto telnet. I also tried connecting to the main site by typing the ip address in IE and in MS-Dos. No luck. So now I can't get back in my router to change the faulty filter. Ahhhh!!!! What do I do?!?!

The only way to get back into the router is to reload the Firmware.

First download the Firmware using this link. (ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/314v325.zip) Connect the router using a RS232C Straight through serial cable through the manager port at the back of the router to the COM (Serial) port at the back of the computer.

1. Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications and click on HyperTerminal.
2. Type in any name for the HyperTerminal connection and then click OK.
3. In the “Connect To” window set the “Connect Using” option to “Direct to Com1” or “Direct to Com2” depending on the respective communication port you have connected the router to.
4. On the Serial Port (COM1 or COM2) Properties click on Restore Defaults and then change the Flow Control option to “HARDWARE”.
5. Verify that the HyperTerminal window says “Connected xx:xx:xx” which means that the Terminal session is active and connected to the specified Serial Port.
6. Power cycle the router. On the HyperTerminal wait till the message “Press any key to enter debug mode within 3 seconds.....” appears. Press the “Return” key to enter the debug mode.
7. After entering the debug mode type the command “atur3” (without quotes) and press “ENTER”. The message shown on the screen would be, “Starting XMODEM upload (CRC mode)”. When the Terminal windows shows “CCCCCCCCC...” on the screen click on Transfer and then click on “Send File”.
8. After clicking on Send File, browse for the location where you have unzipped the router’s firmware and select the “ROM” file from there to be uploaded. Make sure that the Protocol selected is “Xmodem”. After specifying the path click on SEND and it will start uploading the “rom” file. After the upload is finished the router will restart otherwise type “atgo” (without quotes) to restart the router.
9. When the router comes back, type the command “atur”(without quotes) and press “ENTER”. The message shown on the screen would be, “Starting XMODEM upload (CRC mode)”. When the Terminal windows shows “CCCCCCCCC...” on the screen click on Transfer and then click on “Send File”.
10. After clicking on Send File, browse for the location where the router's firmware file, i.e., 314v325.bin has been downloaded / copied. Make sure that the Protocol selected is “Xmodem”. After specifying the path click on SEND and it will start uploading the .bin file. After the upload is finished the router will restart.
11. Once router has restarted try accessing it through telnet or web interface and make sure that it shows the new firmware version under Maintenance -> System Status when accessing via IE/Netscape. Via telnet go to menu 24.1 to check the version of routers’ firmware.
