I'm trying to share internet connectiopn and allow my son to play a few of his internetgames on a Local Area Network with these 2 PC's. I havent been able to have any succes yet, but I'm hoping you guys can get us straighten us out.

Host = Dell Inspiron 8100 xp-pro w/ Dell 8255x- based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)

Client = Win 98 pc= Gateway gl350 p2 192.0 mb ram -Linksys 10/100 Lan Card

Linksys 10/100 router
2 cables - 1 to each pc.

"Dell xp Local Connection Properties"
(these are whats checked )
Client for MS Networks
NWLink NetBios
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Print Sharing
Internet Protocol (TC/IP)

Gateway Network Properties
Client for MS Networks
DialUp Adapter
LinkSys Line 100 Xv5 Fast Ethernet Adapter
NetBUI Dialup Adapter
NetBUI LinkSys 100xv5 Fast Ethernet Adapter
TC/IP Dial Up Adapter
TC/IP LinkSya Adapter
File and Printer Sharing
In computer name, I named each pc what it was, i.e. Dell, Dell, Gateway, Gateway. The workgroup is MSHOME for both pc's.

I believe I have a network due to the fact that my Dell appears on my Gatway in Network Neighborhood and vice versa for the other pc, but I cant get on the internet with my client pc (Gateway)
I've ran the wizard too many times to count and keep getting a dns error at the bottom of my MSIE browser
"res //C:\Windows\System\SHDLCOC.DLL/dnserror.htm......

I've ran the wizard in both pc's, have read your troubleshooting guides and still cant seem to get my internet connection on my host pc.
Could you help me out ?
tx,Tom

The only problem is that the Win98 PC cannot access urls on the internet ?

If you are getting DNS errors then its a failure to find the ISP's DNS server and resolve the url to an IP address.

Check the connection properties of the Win98 PC Linksys adapter and ensure you have TCP/IP installed and it is set to get DNS address automatically and has a gateway of the Linksys router address (usually 192.168.1.1).

I did forget to mention one thing that I dont know is related to this or not, but the Gateway, when Rebooted, displays a error window "Failed to load NEWDOT~NET.DLL" or something close to that. I'm at work atm and cant tell you exactly what it reads.

2 problems , actually.
1. The Client pc (Gateway) cannot access the internet when Internet Explorer is opened. I keep getting that dns error after sever attempts of trying to fix it. ( the Dell (Host) is logged on to the internet via 56k Modem, btw, when I try this, and can open web pages with no problems .
2.niether computer sees the other computer when one is set up for a pc game as a LAN server.
I appreciate your replies, btw. tx

I was just trying to wirte a reply that games can do bad things to PCs when my XP Pro SP1 PC blue screened on me. Hmmm.

Anyway, games can affect the PC (even on XP though they should not) and I'm not sure I would expect too much until the game is finished and PC rebooted.

I don't recognise that error you posted.

Try my suggestion posted earlier, with the XP PC rebooted.

You do seem to have a mix of protocols running and whilst they should run side by side its best to minimise them. Is it the game that needs IPX ? I would remove all protocols except TCP/IP if you can.

It was that "Error-failed to Load NEW~DOTNET.dll file

---->NEWDOTNET VICTIMS (http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/10922.html)
The Fix (http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm)
All is good.
tx for your help and I'll take your advice and try and remove all but the tcp/ip protocols.
